ESM continues... amidst the new normal.

So I bet you're wondering what COVID-19 has done to the mission. Let me take you back to about 3 weeks ago.

Get this, right?

So it's the weekend of March 21/22 and we've just received news on the current stats of COVID-19 in New York. At this stage it's gotten so bad that international flights are cancelling left, right and centre and the Archbishop of New York has ordered all schools in the diocese to close - including our beloved home.

Even though it was a shock and most of the missionaries wanted to stay, despite not knowing how long they would have to stay, I witnessed an incredible growth in all of us through our response. After hours of long, emotional and difficult discussion we praised God.

Yes, it was difficult to be confronted by this. Yes, we tried to work out if there was any possibility we could continue living in community. Yes, it was a hard pill to swallow to know that our only option was to be sent home.

But our faith calls us to praise God and thank Him for everything. EVERYTHING. Even if it wasn't what we expected. Life isn't about living according to a plan. We must live by expecting the unexpected and trust that the Lord will bring good out of absolutely everything.

One of the most beautiful things to be apart of was the departure of a missionary when they left the house, but at the same time knowing that this was not the end. Three of us had already left before me and it was the same cheerful goodbyes for each us. This was my send off before I left for STRAYA!

But one thing is for sure.

COVID-19 has not killed ESM!

Our love for each other holds together our unity and allows us to virtually live as a community by connecting from each of our corners of the world.

We have been planning an online mission for Holy Week catered to our local Bronx high school students. We are also continuing theology classes multiple times a week given by our beloved Fr. Charles who will also be giving talks every day during the Triduum to help us live the Paschal Mystery; the climax of the Church year, Jesus Christ risen from the dead!

"Allelu-" (kidding!)

On behalf of ESM New York, we wish you a safe and blessed Easter!
